Foiling

Adding a foil finish to your printed materials creates a sumptuous effect - it can be used to enhance any printed item and is usually found on high quality brochures and invites to show the quality behind the service or goods that are being offered. Foiling can be applied on its own or in conjunction with print to create different effects.

Traditional foil blocking (or hot foil stamping) is the process whereby metallic foil is applied to paper or card via a heated die which is stamped onto the foil. It can be flat or textured, embossed and debossed, metallic or non-metallic (pigment). The most popular colours used are metallic silver and gold, but bronze, copper, red, blue and other colours are also available - you can use a matt white foil on to a coloured board for example. A minimum quantity is usually applicable with special colour choices. Security foils are also available to avoid counterfeiting and are ideal to use on certificates and tickets.

Digital foiling is a relatively new technology, which offers the following features and benefits:

  • perfect for short runs and variable data campaigns
  • raised foil but no deboss in the back of the sheet
  • high gloss finish
  • no die required reducing set up costs
  • great registration making it perfect for intricate designs
  • various substrates available - paper, board and plastics such as polypropylene and PVC
